What is Kainchi Dham (Neem Karoli Baba Ashram)?
Kainchi Dham is the world-famous ashram and temple complex of Sri Neem Karoli Baba (affectionately called Maharaj-ji), located on the scenic banks of the Kshipra River near Bhowali, Nainital district, Uttarakhand. Founded in 1964 by Neem Karoli Baba, the ashram sits in a tranquil valley flanked by forested Himalayan hills, approximately 17 km from Nainital town. The compound includes a main Hanuman temple, a Ram temple, and several ashram buildings where devotees from across the world come to seek blessings, meditate, and find solace.
Kainchi Dham has achieved global recognition as a spiritual destination not only for its profound religious significance but also because some of the most influential figures of the modern world visited here. Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple, came to India specifically seeking Neem Karoli Baba in 1974. Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, visited Kainchi Dham in 2015 on a personal pilgrimage, famously inspired by Steve Jobs's account of his own visit. Larry Brilliant, Ram Dass, and numerous other pioneers of technology and spirituality were devotees of Maharaj-ji.

History & Spiritual Significance
Sri Neem Karoli Baba, also known as Neeb Karori Baba, was one of the most revered Hindu saints of the 20th century. Born in Akbarpur, Uttar Pradesh, he was a devotee of Lord Hanuman and was famed for his miraculous healing abilities, profound wisdom, and unconditional love for all who came to him. He established ashrams across northern India, with Kainchi Dham being the most significant.
The Kainchi Dham Ashram was established in 1964 after Maharaj-ji experienced a profound vision at this spot on the banks of the Kshipra River. The main Hanuman temple was consecrated and the ashram community grew rapidly. Maharaj-ji passed into mahasamadhi in 1973, but the ashram has continued to thrive and attract millions of seekers annually.
The ashram's fame exploded globally through Ram Dass (Richard Alpert), the Harvard professor-turned-spiritual teacher who became one of Maharaj-ji's most prominent Western devotees. His book Be Here Now (1971) introduced millions of Western readers to Maharaj-ji's teachings. Steve Jobs read this book as a young man and made his journey to India — specifically to seek Neem Karoli Baba — a journey that deeply influenced his philosophy of intuition, simplicity, and consciousness.
The sacred June 15th annual mela (fair) at Kainchi Dham is one of the most significant events in the ashram's calendar, drawing over 100,000 devotees from across India and the world to the small valley beside the Kshipra River.

Best Time to Visit
Kainchi Dham is open and welcoming year-round. The most sacred and significant time is the June 15 annual mela (established by Maharaj-ji himself) — the ashram's founding anniversary — when over 100,000 devotees gather. The winter months (October–February) are peaceful and uncrowded. The Adi Kailash return visit in May–June and September–October integrates perfectly with the ashram's regular schedule.
